Summer term issue 1

Dear Parents and Carers

It's been another busy two weeks, with the students learning lots and undertaking many exciting things, as the pictures below highlight.

I recently ran a session to parents/carers around our behaviour management approach, including the use of physical intervention.  If you missed this and would like to have attended, please do get in touch and I will try to schedule in a repeat session.

I hope the forecast regarding the weather for the coming week is correct, and that you can all have a restful half term.  We look forward to welcoming the pupils back to school on Monday 1st June.

Best wishes.

Richard Triggs

Head of Provision

Our classes:

Poldhu

Poldhu class enjoyed designing and making smoothies in their Design Technology lessons this half-term. In PSHE, the pupils have been learning about money and role-played using debit cards, cash, and cheques in a pretend bank. Our sensory curriculum learners have been learning about the weather and loved exploring magic snow! We are so proud of the progress the pupils are making towards their Personal Learning Goals; LEGO Therapy, Maths, Phonics and English! They have also continued to enjoy their gymnastics and Moving to Learn sessions.

Gunwalloe

Gunwalloe class have been busy investigating fractions in our maths lessons. We have been comparing fractions and completing some practical activities to model our learning. We have had some great moments with friends, listening to each other, compromising on games and having lots of fun with our peers. We made some yummy treats in the kitchen and have finished the week with a fun DT project where we designed, made and tasted some yummy summer smoothies. We even had a popup Cury fruit shop where we thought about what coins we needed to pay and used our shopping list to select the things we needed to buy.

Polurrian

Polurrian Class have had a fantastic few weeks and have been working incredibly hard across all areas of learning.

In Science, the children have been exploring light and reflection through a range of practical activities and investigations. In Maths, they have been developing their understanding of mass, capacity and fractions, using practical resources to support their learning.

In English, the class have been focusing on writing instructions and thinking carefully about sequencing, clear language and how to make their writing easy to follow. In DT, the children have been adapting recipes and exploring how ingredients can be changed to improve or personalise a dish.

The children continue to really enjoy their Rebound Therapy sessions on the trampoline, developing confidence, coordination and communication skills whilst having lots of fun.

Alongside their learning, the class have been working hard on building and developing positive friendships, showing kindness, teamwork and support for one another throughout the term.

Attendance

Our whole school attendance was 95% last week and 93% this week.

School is better when you’re here!

Every day in school matters and is a valuable opportunity for our pupils to learn, grow, and thrive. When children are present, they not only benefit from lessons and learning opportunities, but also from friendships, routines, and the wider experiences that help them grow in confidence and resilience.

Cornwall Council’s code of conduct for the issue of penalty notices requires that we share the information below with our families on a termly basis. Please do read this information carefully, especially given that there were changes to the government statutory requirements for attendance in August 2024, particularly around the Penalty Notice framework.

At Cury School, we understand that there are times when it may be necessary for a student to be absent from school, such as when they are genuinely unwell. In these instances, it is appropriate to authorise the absence. However, the Government has made it clear that children should not be taken out of school for other reasons unless the school agrees it is justified under ‘exceptional circumstances.’

As part of this regulation, any requests for leave must be made in writing to the Head of Provision, using our school’s ‘Leave of Absence in Exceptional Circumstances’ form, which you can get from the school office.

No absence for holiday can be authorised. Any absence required for exceptional circumstance will always be considered by the Head of Provision, but the definition of an ‘exceptional circumstance’ is very tight and most requests that we receive do not fall into the government’s ‘exceptional circumstance’ category.

Penalty fines are issued to each parent, not jointly. Therefore, each parent would receive a penalty fine of £80 if a child was to accrue 10 unauthorised sessions from school. Below are some examples of how 10 unauthorised absence sessions could occur:

  • 5 days of school missed due to holiday.
  • 3 days missed for a holiday and 2 days where absence is not reported to school.
  • 10 days of unauthorised lateness to school.

We have been asked to communicate the below information from the government:

‘Parent’ as set out in Section 576 of the Education Act 1996, defines parent to include: natural parents, whether they are married or not; any person or body who has parental responsibility for a child (as defined by the Children Act 1989) and; any person who, although not a natural parent, has care of a child. Having care of a child means a person with whom a child lives and who looks after a child, irrespective of what their relationship is with said child.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information. Working together, we can make sure that your child’s attendance remains strong and that they benefit fully from all that Cury School has to offer.

We encourage you to contact the school if you have any concerns or if you need advice and support in helping your child maintain regular school attendance.

At Cury School, we are committed to working with parents and carers to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Please read the following letter, originally sent out in January, which explains the changes that came into effect in August 2024:
