Summer term issue 1

Dear Parents and Carers

On Monday afternoon at 14.15 , I will be hosting a talk to any parents/carers who wish to attend, about restrictive physical intervention and the use of reasonable force in schools.  This is following new guidelines that have been issued by the Department for Education in April 2026.  If you are unable to attend, but would like to find out more, please do give me a ring.  However, I'd like to reassure you that, in terms of our day to day practice, nothing has changed other than the fact that you will also receive a letter in addition to a call, giving you details of the intervention.

As always, we welcome feedback about our School and want to remind you that our doors are always open should you wish to come and look around the school at any point.

Best wishes.

Richard Triggs

Head of Provision

Our classes:

Poldhu

Poldhu class have been engaging well in their Stormbreak sessions where they have been exploring and learning how nature can ground us. The children took 'nature photos' and worked collaboratively to make a really long daisy chain! In DT, the children have been investigating fruits and vegetables and developing their cutting and juicing skills. In PSHE, Poldhu class are learning about money and how to keep it safe, and they made a coin purse to take home. The children have been enjoying lots of sensory movement during their Moving to Learn sessions. They have loved being back at the Lake swimming and riding the canoes and speedboats.

Gunwalloe

Gunwalloe have had a great few weeks since starting back after Easter break. We have welcomed a new class member and have enjoyed spending time with him and introducing him to our routines and wonderful school environment. In Maths, we have started to learn about fractions and what they represent. We have been using some new vocabulary to explain fractions such as ‘numerator’ and  ‘denominator’. It has been interesting to discover that when the numerator is the same as the denominator, the fraction is equal to one whole. We have been focusing on thinking of words to describe the characteristics of characters from our text, the BFG in English, and have started to produce some sentences that include interesting adjectives. Our value focus had been RESPECT, and we have been talking about lots of ways we show respect to each other and to things around us. It has been great to see such fantastic, respectful listening this week, particularly when cooking and listening to Kate during our ‘table time’ sessions.

Polurrian

This week at Polurrian we have enjoyed a range of fun and educational activities.

In baking, we made pizzas and cheesecakes, following recipes and developing our cooking skills. In history, we explored World War II and learnt about life during this important time.

We also practised diary writing, reflecting on our experiences and building confidence in our writing. Alongside this, we learnt more about recipes, ingredients, and following instructions.

It has been a fantastic week of learning, creativity, and teamwork.

Forest School

This week at Forest School, we enjoyed making beautiful log slice decorations using natural materials and our creativity.

We also learnt how to tell the age of a tree by counting the rings in the wood. The children loved being tree detectives and discovering that each ring represents one year of growth.

It was a wonderful session full of creativity, curiosity, and outdoor learning. We look forward to more adventures next week!

Attendance

Our whole school attendance was 96% last week and 96% this week.

School is better when you’re here!

Every day in school matters and is a valuable opportunity for our pupils to learn, grow, and thrive. When children are present, they not only benefit from lessons and learning opportunities, but also from friendships, routines, and the wider experiences that help them grow in confidence and resilience.

Cornwall Council’s code of conduct for the issue of penalty notices requires that we share the information below with our families on a termly basis. Please do read this information carefully, especially given that there were changes to the government statutory requirements for attendance in August 2024, particularly around the Penalty Notice framework.

At Cury School, we understand that there are times when it may be necessary for a student to be absent from school, such as when they are genuinely unwell. In these instances, it is appropriate to authorise the absence. However, the Government has made it clear that children should not be taken out of school for other reasons unless the school agrees it is justified under ‘exceptional circumstances.’

As part of this regulation, any requests for leave must be made in writing to the Head of Provision, using our school’s ‘Leave of Absence in Exceptional Circumstances’ form, which you can get from the school office.

No absence for holiday can be authorised. Any absence required for exceptional circumstance will always be considered by the Head of Provision, but the definition of an ‘exceptional circumstance’ is very tight and most requests that we receive do not fall into the government’s ‘exceptional circumstance’ category.

Penalty fines are issued to each parent, not jointly. Therefore, each parent would receive a penalty fine of £80 if a child was to accrue 10 unauthorised sessions from school. Below are some examples of how 10 unauthorised absence sessions could occur:

  • 5 days of school missed due to holiday.
  • 3 days missed for a holiday and 2 days where absence is not reported to school.
  • 10 days of unauthorised lateness to school.

We have been asked to communicate the below information from the government:

‘Parent’ as set out in Section 576 of the Education Act 1996, defines parent to include: natural parents, whether they are married or not; any person or body who has parental responsibility for a child (as defined by the Children Act 1989) and; any person who, although not a natural parent, has care of a child. Having care of a child means a person with whom a child lives and who looks after a child, irrespective of what their relationship is with said child.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information. Working together, we can make sure that your child’s attendance remains strong and that they benefit fully from all that Cury School has to offer.

We encourage you to contact the school if you have any concerns or if you need advice and support in helping your child maintain regular school attendance.

At Cury School, we are committed to working with parents and carers to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Please read the following letter, originally sent out in January, which explains the changes that came into effect in August 2024:
