Spring Term Issue 6

Dear Parents and Carers

Please do take the time to read the Newsletter as there is some important information around forthcoming events, as well as highlighting all of the exciting things that have been happening at Cury over the last few weeks.

A word of warning - if you are squeamish, I'd avoid looking at the pictures below of our Polurrian students undertaking a dissection as part of their Science work.

I hope you all have a lovely Easter break and we look forward to welcoming the students back on Monday 20th April.

Best wishes.

Richard Triggs

Head of Provision

Our classes:

Poldhu

Poldhu class have been developing their communication and teamwork skills, and we have been so impressed at the kindness and respect they have shown! They have worked together during Lego Therapy, creating collaborative artwork using paints, baking carrot cakes in the kitchen and during playtimes outside. In art, the children worked collaboratively using newspaper and making tape to make a sculpture. They have all been working so hard and we hope they enjoy a well-deserved break!

Gunwalloe

Gunwalloe class have been learning about how artists use basic shapes to structure a drawing. They have also thought about how tones are created with colours by adding white or black. We looked at the work of Henri Rousseau and explored how he used the rainforest as the subject for his artworks. We enjoyed having a go at replicating one of his artworks, thinking about the shapes we could see by looking really closely, trying and creating a tonal palette of green colours to use in our artwork.

New skills and challenges have been enjoyed during gymnastics recently, and we have tried really hard at creating different body shapes using the equipment. We loved Easter-themed activities this week and celebrating each other in our whole school assembly.

Polurrian

We have had a brilliant couple of weeks in Polurrian class. The children have worked incredibly hard and their enthusiasm for learning has really shone through.

As part of our science topic on the circulatory system, we were lucky enough to have Richard do a pig heart and lungs dissection with us. The children were fascinated by this, and it was an amazing experience for them!

In English we have been focusing on story writing. This has been linked to our Vikings topic. The children have created some very imaginative stories which they have made into books of their own with illustrations included!

The children have really enjoyed forest school with Lucy. They have been focusing on fire lighting, with the children showing real progression in doing this. During catering, each child made their own pancake mix with Will and then cooked it on the fire at forest school!

On a Monday afternoon, pupils from Nancealverne have led football sessions for the children at Cury. This has been a great bonding activity and has seen them form some really positive relationships with others outside of Cury!

Attendance

Our whole school attendance was 93% last week and 93% this week.

School is better when you’re here!

Every day in school matters and is a valuable opportunity for our pupils to learn, grow, and thrive. When children are present, they not only benefit from lessons and learning opportunities, but also from friendships, routines, and the wider experiences that help them grow in confidence and resilience.

Cornwall Council’s code of conduct for the issue of penalty notices requires that we share the information below with our families on a termly basis. Please do read this information carefully, especially given that there were changes to the government statutory requirements for attendance in August 2024, particularly around the Penalty Notice framework.

At Cury School, we understand that there are times when it may be necessary for a student to be absent from school, such as when they are genuinely unwell. In these instances, it is appropriate to authorise the absence. However, the Government has made it clear that children should not be taken out of school for other reasons unless the school agrees it is justified under ‘exceptional circumstances.’

As part of this regulation, any requests for leave must be made in writing to the Head of Provision, using our school’s ‘Leave of Absence in Exceptional Circumstances’ form, which you can get from the school office.

No absence for holiday can be authorised. Any absence required for exceptional circumstance will always be considered by the Head of Provision, but the definition of an ‘exceptional circumstance’ is very tight and most requests that we receive do not fall into the government’s ‘exceptional circumstance’ category.

Penalty fines are issued to each parent, not jointly. Therefore, each parent would receive a penalty fine of £80 if a child was to accrue 10 unauthorised sessions from school. Below are some examples of how 10 unauthorised absence sessions could occur:

  • 5 days of school missed due to holiday.
  • 3 days missed for a holiday and 2 days where absence is not reported to school.
  • 10 days of unauthorised lateness to school.

We have been asked to communicate the below information from the government:

‘Parent’ as set out in Section 576 of the Education Act 1996, defines parent to include: natural parents, whether they are married or not; any person or body who has parental responsibility for a child (as defined by the Children Act 1989) and; any person who, although not a natural parent, has care of a child. Having care of a child means a person with whom a child lives and who looks after a child, irrespective of what their relationship is with said child.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information. Working together, we can make sure that your child’s attendance remains strong and that they benefit fully from all that Cury School has to offer.

We encourage you to contact the school if you have any concerns or if you need advice and support in helping your child maintain regular school attendance.

At Cury School, we are committed to working with parents and carers to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Please read the following letter, originally sent out in January, which explains the changes that came into effect in August 2024:
