Spring Term Issue 4

Dear Parents and Carers

Once again I think you will agree that the pupils have had a rich and varied time here at Cury.  The highlight for me was to see the pupils arrive in their costumes for World Book Day.

We have recently had a professional photographer come into School to take pictures that will enhance our web-site.  I have had a sneak preview of these and there are some lovely pictures of the pupils/staff engaged in their studies.  When these are uploaded, I will let you so that you can view them for your yourself.

I'd like to remind you that we have our Parents evening coming up on the 19th March, and your child's class teacher will be in touch to arrange convenient times with you.  I will also be available on this date and you are welcome to pop in to chat with me.

Our classes:

Poldhu

Poldhu class have enjoyed practising sensory regulation by den building and exploring lights. In Art, the children were thoroughly engaged in making 3D models out of coloured paper. In Geography, Poldhu class are learning about the weather around the UK. They went outside to find clues that could tell us what the current season is. The children continue to develop their love for reading as they explore a range of books and sensory stories.

World Book Day 2026

On World Book Day, the children came to school dressed as their favourite book characters. They explored lots of books and discussed their favourite authors. In English, Poldhu class are reading 'Ben and Gran and the whole wide wonderful world' by Gillian Shields. The children then wrote and published some fantastic stories where the characters went on an adventure!

Gunwalloe

Gunwalloe have been learning more about the rainforest, what the climate is like, what animals live there and the 4 different layers. We have found rainforests on the map and enjoyed watching some rainforest information videos in class. We even designed our own new species that we think may yet to be discovered.

We have also been thinking again about friendships and relationships and discussing how it feels to have a friend and what behaviours they have that make us feel good inside.

Polurrian

The past two weeks in Polurrian Class have been busy, creative and lots of fun!

We have been going to gymnastics where the children had the opportunity to practice their balance, coordination and strength. They showed great determination as they tried different movements and equipment, and it was wonderful to see their confidence growing as they challenged themselves.

Back in the classroom, we have been developing our mixed media art skills. The children explored using a range of materials and techniques to create layered artwork. They experimented with colour, texture and different tools, producing some fantastic and imaginative pieces.

One of the highlights of the fortnight was baking pasties. The children loved getting hands-on with the ingredients, learning about the process of preparing and assembling their pasties. They carefully filled, folded and sealed them before baking. The classroom smelled amazing, and the children were very proud of their delicious creations!

We also celebrated World Book Day with a range of fun reading activities. The children enjoyed sharing their favourite stories, exploring different books and celebrating their love of reading together.

It has been a wonderful couple of weeks filled with creativity, teamwork and new experiences. Well done to everyone in Polurrian Class for their enthusiasm and hard work!

We are looking forward to another exciting fortnight ahead.

Forest School Update

In Forest School this week, the children created bug hotels using natural materials such as sticks, bark and leaves. We talked about why minibeasts are important and how bug hotels provide safe places for them to live.

The children worked together to collect materials and build their bug hotels, showing great teamwork and creativity. Once finished, we placed them around the forest school area ready for our tiny visitors.

Attendance

Our whole school attendance was 92% last week and 94% this week.

School is better when you’re here!

Every day in school matters and is a valuable opportunity for our pupils to learn, grow, and thrive. When children are present, they not only benefit from lessons and learning opportunities, but also from friendships, routines, and the wider experiences that help them grow in confidence and resilience.

Cornwall Council’s code of conduct for the issue of penalty notices requires that we share the information below with our families on a termly basis. Please do read this information carefully, especially given that there were changes to the government statutory requirements for attendance in August 2024, particularly around the Penalty Notice framework.

At Cury School, we understand that there are times when it may be necessary for a student to be absent from school, such as when they are genuinely unwell. In these instances, it is appropriate to authorise the absence. However, the Government has made it clear that children should not be taken out of school for other reasons unless the school agrees it is justified under ‘exceptional circumstances.’

As part of this regulation, any requests for leave must be made in writing to the Head of Provision, using our school’s ‘Leave of Absence in Exceptional Circumstances’ form, which you can get from the school office.

No absence for holiday can be authorised. Any absence required for exceptional circumstance will always be considered by the Head of Provision, but the definition of an ‘exceptional circumstance’ is very tight and most requests that we receive do not fall into the government’s ‘exceptional circumstance’ category.

Penalty fines are issued to each parent, not jointly. Therefore, each parent would receive a penalty fine of £80 if a child was to accrue 10 unauthorised sessions from school. Below are some examples of how 10 unauthorised absence sessions could occur:

  • 5 days of school missed due to holiday.
  • 3 days missed for a holiday and 2 days where absence is not reported to school.
  • 10 days of unauthorised lateness to school.

We have been asked to communicate the below information from the government:

‘Parent’ as set out in Section 576 of the Education Act 1996, defines parent to include: natural parents, whether they are married or not; any person or body who has parental responsibility for a child (as defined by the Children Act 1989) and; any person who, although not a natural parent, has care of a child. Having care of a child means a person with whom a child lives and who looks after a child, irrespective of what their relationship is with said child.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information. Working together, we can make sure that your child’s attendance remains strong and that they benefit fully from all that Cury School has to offer.

We encourage you to contact the school if you have any concerns or if you need advice and support in helping your child maintain regular school attendance.

At Cury School, we are committed to working with parents and carers to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Please read the following letter, originally sent out in January, which explains the changes that came into effect in August 2024:
