Spring Term Issue 2

Dear Parents and Carers

Please do take the time to read through the wonderful things that our pupils have been doing over the last few weeks.  I hope that we are creating good memories for our learners as well as improving their academic knowledge.

As always, we are keen to get your feedback about the school.  I would be grateful if you could take the time to complete the attached questionnaire.

Cury School - Parent/Carer Questionnaire – January 2026 – Fill in form

Kind regards

Richard Triggs

Head of Provision

Our classes:

Poldhu

Poldhu class are learning about Toys from the Past in History and English. They have been exploring non-fiction texts and enjoyed playing with some historic toys. To celebrate Burns Night, the children listened to poems by Robert Burns and made oatcakes in their cooking lesson.

In PE, they have been exploring sensory dance to music through animal movements and ribbons. The children also showed fantastic collaboration when making a bug hotel to protect and support our local wildlife.

They also worked together to match animals and plants to their habitats in Science. It has been lovely to recently see the children continuing to build relationships through play therapy and to hear them be so enthusiastic about their phonics learning!

Gunwalloe

Gunwalloe have been learning about how to create non-chronological reports; what features they have and what distinguishes fact from opinion. We have been beginning to think about what we would like to create our own non-chronological reports on and planning what information we will include to share our knowledge.

In our DT we have been thinking about structures and how we can construct a 3D model from using 2D shapes by creating nets. It is interesting to think about how we can create strong structures using different shapes. We will have to think about all the features we want to include in our medieval castle design to plan all the parts we need to construct over the next few weeks.

Gunwalloe have also been focusing on how it feels to be and have good friends, how this makes us happy and we laugh and have fun more. It’s been great to think about how we can help ourselves feel good inside and make others feel good too.

Polurrian

The past two weeks have been full of exciting learning experiences in Polurrian Class, with pupils enthusiastically taking part in a wide range of creative, practical and physical activities.

We were very proud to finish writing our poems, with everyone working hard to edit, improve and share their final pieces. The pupils showed great imagination and confidence in expressing their ideas, and it was wonderful to see their pride in their completed work.

In the kitchen, we turned our attention to baking and made delicious shortbread and oatcakes. The class followed instructions carefully, measured ingredients accurately and enjoyed working together as a team – not to mention tasting the finished results!

Physical wellbeing has also been a big focus. Pupils took part in rebound therapy and gymnastics sessions, where they developed balance, coordination and strength while having lots of fun. Everyone showed determination and resilience as they tried new movements and challenged themselves.

To round off a very busy fortnight, we became engineers and designers while creating prototype Mars rovers. The pupils loved planning, building and testing their designs, showing excellent problem-solving skills and creativity as they thought about how a rover might work on another planet.

Well done to everyone in Polurrian Class for their hard work, enthusiasm and positive attitudes over the last two weeks – it’s been a pleasure to see so much learning happening in so many different ways!

Forest school fun!!

This week at Forest School we got creative with nature, making our very own stickmen. Unfortunately, due to the heavy rain, the woods had to be brought inside, but lots of fun was had. Using sticks and leaves from the woodland floor, the children designed unique characters and let their imaginations run wild. It was a lovely opportunity to develop creativity, fine motor skills and teamwork, while connecting with the natural environment. The stickmen enjoyed coming to life in school and decided to have more fun at home.

Attendance

Our whole school attendance was 97% last week and 94% this week.

School is better when you’re here!

Every day in school matters and is a valuable opportunity for our pupils to learn, grow, and thrive. When children are present, they not only benefit from lessons and learning opportunities, but also from friendships, routines, and the wider experiences that help them grow in confidence and resilience.

Cornwall Council’s code of conduct for the issue of penalty notices requires that we share the information below with our families on a termly basis. Please do read this information carefully, especially given that there were changes to the government statutory requirements for attendance in August 2024, particularly around the Penalty Notice framework.

At Cury School, we understand that there are times when it may be necessary for a student to be absent from school, such as when they are genuinely unwell. In these instances, it is appropriate to authorise the absence. However, the Government has made it clear that children should not be taken out of school for other reasons unless the school agrees it is justified under ‘exceptional circumstances.’

As part of this regulation, any requests for leave must be made in writing to the Head of Provision, using our school’s ‘Leave of Absence in Exceptional Circumstances’ form, which you can get from the school office.

No absence for holiday can be authorised. Any absence required for exceptional circumstance will always be considered by the Head of Provision, but the definition of an ‘exceptional circumstance’ is very tight and most requests that we receive do not fall into the government’s ‘exceptional circumstance’ category.

Penalty fines are issued to each parent, not jointly. Therefore, each parent would receive a penalty fine of £80 if a child was to accrue 10 unauthorised sessions from school. Below are some examples of how 10 unauthorised absence sessions could occur:

  • 5 days of school missed due to holiday.
  • 3 days missed for a holiday and 2 days where absence is not reported to school.
  • 10 days of unauthorised lateness to school.

We have been asked to communicate the below information from the government:

‘Parent’ as set out in Section 576 of the Education Act 1996, defines parent to include: natural parents, whether they are married or not; any person or body who has parental responsibility for a child (as defined by the Children Act 1989) and; any person who, although not a natural parent, has care of a child. Having care of a child means a person with whom a child lives and who looks after a child, irrespective of what their relationship is with said child.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information. Working together, we can make sure that your child’s attendance remains strong and that they benefit fully from all that Cury School has to offer.

We encourage you to contact the school if you have any concerns or if you need advice and support in helping your child maintain regular school attendance.

At Cury School, we are committed to working with parents and carers to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Please read the following letter, originally sent out in January, which explains the changes that came into effect in August 2024:
