Issue 06

Dear Parents and Carers

I hope you will agree that this has been a really productive term for our students and that they have had a rich and varied diet of learning, enrichment and therapy.

I was so pleased to see so many of you at the Christmas performance in the local Church and after, in school for the Christmas Fayre; I hope you'll agree that our learners are incredible and have made so much progress

Your support is so well received and we can achieve so much more when we work together.

Today, we have presented students with certificates for some of their achievements.  Please do remind them to show you these.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Mery Christmas and a happy New Year.

Richard Triggs

Head of Provision

Attendance

Our whole school attendance was 94% last week and 93% this week.

School is better when you’re here!

Every day in school matters and is a valuable opportunity for our pupils to learn, grow, and thrive. When children are present, they not only benefit from lessons and learning opportunities, but also from friendships, routines, and the wider experiences that help them grow in confidence and resilience.

Cornwall Council’s code of conduct for the issue of penalty notices requires that we share the information below with our families on a termly basis. Please do read this information carefully, especially given that there were changes to the government statutory requirements for attendance in August 2024, particularly around the Penalty Notice framework.

At Cury School, we understand that there are times when it may be necessary for a student to be absent from school, such as when they are genuinely unwell. In these instances, it is appropriate to authorise the absence. However, the Government has made it clear that children should not be taken out of school for other reasons unless the school agrees it is justified under ‘exceptional circumstances.’

As part of this regulation, any requests for leave must be made in writing to the Head of Provision, using our school’s ‘Leave of Absence in Exceptional Circumstances’ form, which you can get from the school office.

No absence for holiday can be authorised. Any absence required for exceptional circumstance will always be considered by the Head of Provision, but the definition of an ‘exceptional circumstance’ is very tight and most requests that we receive do not fall into the government’s ‘exceptional circumstance’ category.

Penalty fines are issued to each parent, not jointly. Therefore, each parent would receive a penalty fine of £80 if a child was to accrue 10 unauthorised sessions from school. Below are some examples of how 10 unauthorised absence sessions could occur:

  • 5 days of school missed due to holiday.
  • 3 days missed for a holiday and 2 days where absence is not reported to school.
  • 10 days of unauthorised lateness to school.

We have been asked to communicate the below information from the government:

‘Parent’ as set out in Section 576 of the Education Act 1996, defines parent to include: natural parents, whether they are married or not; any person or body who has parental responsibility for a child (as defined by the Children Act 1989) and; any person who, although not a natural parent, has care of a child. Having care of a child means a person with whom a child lives and who looks after a child, irrespective of what their relationship is with said child.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information. Working together, we can make sure that your child’s attendance remains strong and that they benefit fully from all that Cury School has to offer.

We encourage you to contact the school if you have any concerns or if you need advice and support in helping your child maintain regular school attendance.

At Cury School, we are committed to working with parents and carers to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Please read the following letter, originally sent out in January, which explains the changes that came into effect in August 2024:

Our classes

Reading session in memory of baby Bran on 11th December

In Poldhu class, we read ‘Clive Penguin’ by Hew Lewis Jones and ‘How to catch a star’ by Oliver Jeffers as part of a special reading session in memory of baby Bran.

Bran’s Library's mission is to harness the power of stories to create a lasting connection. They support this by gifting a carefully curated selection of picture books.

Bran's Library aims to become a registered charity by 2026 and was started in honour of Helen Green’s baby Bran, who died at 6 days old on NICU after suffering a traumatic brain injury at birth. We shared stories with him from the moment he was born, and continue to read them out loud in memory of him, celebrating our ongoing connection with him as part of our little family.

Bran's Library books are chosen by bereaved parents, ensuring that they are psychologically safe stories, with beautiful illustrations.

In the kitchen, they have been practicing a range of skills to make yummy Christmas treats including Santa fruit skewers! In computing, Poldhu have been learning about coding and used Scratch Jnr to create their own algorithms. They have also continued to enjoy their Moving to Learn sessions and swimming!

Gunwalloe

Gunwalloe Class have had a lovely few weeks running up to the end of term with lots of Christmas filled fun and festive activities. Christmas crafts and cards, singing and dancing, Christmas traditions, baking and gatherings. What a wonderful end to term. We also really enjoyed creating a scientific explosion in our paper mâché volcano! We loved the red frothy foam that exploded out the top. It was such a wonderful end to the term sharing the Christmas spirit with everyone at our Christmas Concert.

Polurrian

Polurrian Class has had a busy and exciting few weeks. The children have been working hard preparing for our Christmas Fayre and have shown great enthusiasm and creativity.

We have enjoyed a visit to the woods, which inspired lots of curiosity and discussion, as well as story writing in class where the children used their imaginations to create their own tales.

The children have also taken part in trampoline sessions to build confidence and coordination, and had lots of fun exploring textures and creativity through mud painting.

Thank you for your continued support—we loved seeing you at the Christmas Fayre.

Online Safety

We will be happy to support you with any online safety questions that you might have.

Young people need to learn to take care of their minds as well as their bodies.

Lots of things can damage the way they feel and think, and it’s more common than people realise – one in every five children, for example, struggles with their mental health. Sending memes, jokes and messages online is easy – but finding the right words to talk to a friend who’s having a hard time can be tricky. Our poster could help your child find the right time – and the right way – to check in with a friend.

Parent and Carer Support

Parents and carers play a significant and important role in their children's lives. Parenting babies, children and young people is exciting and rewarding. However, we also know that there may be challenges along the way. Cornwall has a variety of help and support on offer for both first-time and experienced parents and carers to celebrate parenting, learn new skills and develop confidence.

Cornwall Council's parenting support has a focus on child development, building positive relationships with children and creating opportunities to join parenting communities, have fun and access peer support from other families.

Advice from Devon and Cornwall Police

As children are now writing their Christmas lists to Santa, we would like to inform parents that E-scooters are illegal in public places and can only be ridden on private land with the landowner’s permission. Therefore, we are trying to discourage these as a Christmas present.

There are also limitations on E-bikes.
