Dear Parents and Carers
I was so proud of our pupils on the 11th November at 11.00. Every single pupil showed the utmost respect and remained silent for the entire minute. For me, this shows the progress that they have made.
Looking through this newsletter, I hope that you can see that our pupils have access to a wide range of enrichment and therapeutic activities as well as accessing the typical curricular areas such as Maths, English and Science.
It's also reassuring for me to see the smiles and laughter as I passionately believe that students should enjoy their learning and time with us.
Finally, just a reminder that, as it stands, we are going to move to our slightly amended opening times of 09.00-15.00 from the 1st December. We are just awaiting final confirmation of this from the County Transport Team.

Exciting Christmas Card Project
We’re delighted to announce that our school will be working with IQ Cards this year to create wonderful, personalised Christmas cards designed by our very own pupils.
Each child will receive a template from IQ Cards to create their unique festive design in school. Once completed, these designs will be sent home so that families can see the finished artwork and, if they wish, order printed cards (and other products) featuring their child’s design.
This is a lovely way to share your child’s creativity with friends and family during the festive season — and it also helps raise valuable funds for our school.
Prices for the cards start from £5.50, and further details on how to order will be sent home with the templates.
We can’t wait to see all the wonderful Christmas designs our pupils create!

Poldhu Class – Update on Weekly Activities
A reminder that we have changed our weekly activities for the half-term:
-
Swimming and Soft Play at Nancealverne School will continue on Wednesdays, so please remember to send your child with their swimming kit and towel.
-
We will no longer be visiting the lake on Tuesdays due to the colder winter weather.
-
We will also no longer be attending Penzance Gym Club, and will instead be undertaking PE on Thursdays – children can come to school wearing their PE kit on that day.
Thank you for your support in helping the children be prepared for these activities!

Armistice Day
On Tuesday, we marked Armistice Day with a very special moment of reflection. At 11am, classes came together to observe a two-minute silence, remembering those who have served and sacrificed in wars and conflicts. Every single child showed such respect and maturity during this time — it was truly wonderful to see the children united in such a thoughtful way.
In the classrooms, children also took part in a range of creative activities to help them understand the meaning behind the poppy symbol. One of the highlights of the day was making poppy-shaped biscuits, which were both beautiful and delicious! The children had great fun mixing, cutting, and decorating their biscuits while learning about why the poppy is such an important emblem of remembrance.
We are very proud of how respectfully our pupils marked Armistice Day and how much enthusiasm they showed throughout the activities.
Lest we forget.

Attendance
Regular attendance and punctuality play a vital role in your child’s academic success and personal development. Being present in school every day ensures that students do not miss out on valuable lessons, activities, and social interactions that support their learning journey.
Our whole school attendance was 97% last week and 96% this week.
Thank you for your continued support in making sure your child attends school regularly and arrives on time. Together, we can help every student reach their full potential.
Please read the following letter, originally sent out in January, which explains the changes that came into effect in August 2024:

Poldhu
Poldhu class have enjoyed rebound therapy which provides opportunities for movement, therapeutic exercise and recreation on a trampoline. In English, Poldhu are reading 'Little Glow' by Katie Sahota and are building their skills to write a setting description of lights at nighttime including adjectives and adverbs. It is so nice to see the children's creativity flow in their writing! In Maths, Poldhu class are learning to add numbers together using counters and Base 10. In Science, Poldhu are learning about the weather across the four seasons and made some lovely weather mobiles. In Geography, the children are learning about arial view maps. They enjoyed finding our school and local features on a map and making a messy map of their classroom. We are always proud of Poldhu class and the progress they are all making academically, socially and emotionally!
This week, Cury School have been celebrating Anti-Bullying Week and wore odd socks to raise awareness. The children have been discussing how to be kind to each other in our school community and created class Kindness Agreements. They also have been doing random acts of kindness for their peers and key adults in school.
This week, the children and staff wore something spotty or yellow to raise money for children in need. They also enjoyed some mindfulness Pudsey colouring and activities.
On Remembrance Day, the children showed respect by engaging in a minute's silence. They have also baked and decorated poppy shaped biscuits in their cooking lessons and have enjoyed some poppy arts and crafts.

Gunwalloe
We have had a fun packed few weeks in Gunwalloe Class. We love our dance and movement sessions and had so much fun with a large piece of elastic this week as we wiggled and stretched the fabric as we danced with Gill. We then curled up in the material and enjoyed how our energy shifted into a calmer state as we cooled down. We have learnt about some special days such as bonfire night and Remembrance and thought about the events of the past that relate to these significant events. We even made poppy cookies ! We each had our first session of rebound therapy this week , it was great to learn new things and have some 1-2-1 time on the new trampoline.

Polurrian
We kicked off our sessions with Rebound Therapy on the trampoline, where the children had a blast while benefiting from the physical and sensory experience. The trampoline helps everyone improve their coordination, balance, and motor skills, while also giving us plenty of laughter and fun!
To mark Bonfire Night, we gathered around for a cosy, outdoor treat—toasting marshmallows! The children loved watching the marshmallows slowly turn golden over the fire and enjoyed the delicious results. It was a fantastic way to bring the spirit of the season to life.
We also got creative with some beautiful poetry writing. The children crafted heartfelt poems inspired by the fireworks and the significance of Remembrance Day. The classroom was filled with the sound of imaginative words and reflective thoughts, showcasing their creativity and understanding of these important events.
On Remembrance Day, the children observed the two-minute silence with deep respect and reflection. After a class discussion about the significance of the day, they participated thoughtfully in this moment of remembrance, showing great maturity and sensitivity.
It’s been a wonderful couple of weeks in Polurrian Class, filled with learning, creativity, and community spirit. We can’t wait to see what the next few weeks will bring!

Police are offering drivers and passengers with additional needs free seatbelt covers to help make communication easier after incidents, including road traffic collisions.
The seatbelt covers are a new initiative for Devon & Cornwall Police and give help to people with a speech, language or communication need which may create a barrier. The seatbelt cover can be personalised and wrapped around an adult seatbelt using Velcro. A card inside the seatbelt cover allows the user to add their name, age, address, medical conditions or other information about how they like to be communicated with.
In the event of an emergency, a first responder (someone from the blue light services) or a member of the public can look inside the seatbelt cover to get more information and understand how they can respond appropriately to a person’s individual needs to help make them feel safe again. There is also an option for the seat belt wearer to use the information card to point to a picture showing which part of the body they have injured.
