Issue 03

Dear Parents and Carers

The last 7 weeks have gone in a blink of an eye, and I hope you share my view that the pupils have had a productive time here at Cury.

I want to thank you for your overwhelming support regarding the slight amendment to our school day so that we can build in time for a staff debrief and reflective time at the end of the school day.  It is my hope that this can be put in place for the start of December, but we will confirm this formally during the first week back after half term.

I hope you all have a nice half term.

Poldhu Class – Update on Weekly Activities

We have some changes to our weekly activities next half term:

  • Swimming and Soft Play at Nancealverne School will continue on Wednesdays, so please remember to send your child with their swimming kit and towel.

  • We will no longer be visiting the lake on Tuesdays due to the colder winter weather.

  • We will also no longer be attending Penzance Gym Club, and will instead be doing PE on Thursdays – children can come to school wearing their PE kit on that day.

Thank you for your support in helping the children be prepared for these activities!

Police Dogs Oppo and Jack Visit Our School

We had two very special visitors at our school - Police dogs Oppo and Jack. They came with their handlers to show us what Police dogs do and how they help to keep our community safe.

Oppo and Jack were both very well behaved and friendly. We learnt that Police dogs are trained to help Police officers catch criminals, find missing people, and sniff out things that shouldn’t be there. Their handlers told us how much training the dogs do every day to learn these amazing skills.

We were able to ask lots of questions about their work, like how they know when to chase someone and what rewards they get for doing a good job. It was really interesting to hear that their reward is often a game with their favourite toy. One of the best parts of the visit was watching Oppo complete an obstacle course in the playground.

It was such a fun and exciting day, and we all learnt a lot about how Police dogs help to keep us safe.

Thank you to Oppo, Jack, and their handlers for visiting our school - we hope they come back again soon.

Attendance

Regular attendance and punctuality play a vital role in your child’s academic success and personal development. Being present in school every day ensures that students do not miss out on valuable lessons, activities, and social interactions that support their learning journey.

Our whole school attendance was 97% last week and 91% this week due to some illness.

Thank you for your continued support in making sure your child attends school regularly and arrives on time. Together, we can help every student reach their full potential.

Please read the following letter, originally sent out in January, which explains the changes that came into effect in August 2024:

Our classes

Poldhu

In Design Technology, Poldhu class have been learning about windmills and were so excited to make their own! This week, the children have been learning about Diwali and enjoyed creating their own Rangoli patterns. We have been celebrating Black History Month and found out about Rosa Parks’s story.

In PSHE, Poldhu class have been learning about friendships and getting to know their friends better. The children have enjoyed exploring Art as a mental health tool including blowing paint, colouring and creating footprints! They have also explored how nature affects our mental health. They went on a sensory nature walk to collect natural resources and create tree crayon rubbings.

We had a visit from the local Police who came into school and let the children meet their Police dogs! This week, the children have been very excited for Halloween and engaged in lots of Halloween arts and crafts. We are so proud of how well they settled back in after the summer holidays and hope they enjoy a well-deserved break.

Gunwalloe

In Gunwalloe class we have been continuing our learning in History about the Stone Age period where we have looked at some significant archaeological places in the Uk such as Stonehenge and Star Carr. We have also created some cave art paintings after looking at evidence of cave paintings from this time in history and have tried to recreate a cave painting as a group.

We have loved meeting the Police officers and Police dogs this week and it was great to watch how the officer was training his dog to be his helper when he is on duty. In cooking we have had fun making bread and learning to plait our dough while we listened to the story of The Little Red Hen. We are looking forward to our school break and had a great time on the last Friday of term as we shared fun times making some spooky crafts with our friends.

Polurrian

It’s been a busy and exciting two weeks in Polurrian Class! The children have been fully immersed in a range of creative, active, and hands-on experiences that have kept our classroom buzzing with energy and curiosity.

We’ve been getting into the Halloween spirit with some fantastic Halloween crafts from painting pumpkins to making edible witch hats.

As part of our learning about Diwali, the festival of lights, the children built beautiful Magnatile buildings and placed lights inside to make them glow. It was a lovely way to explore the idea of light and celebration, and the children were so proud of their shimmering creations.

Fridays have quickly become a highlight of our week thanks to our gymnastics sessions. The children have shown great enthusiasm and confidence, especially when jumping into the foam pit — definitely a favourite activity!

And of course, we’ve been spending plenty of time in the kitchen, cooking and baking together. The children have been learning new skills, trying new flavors, and enjoying the sense of pride when theY complete their work.

What a wonderful half term it’s been so far — full of creativity, learning, and lots of fun!

Online Safety

We will be happy to support you with any online safety questions that you might have.

The below online safety guide explores Fortnight

Fortnite continues to reign supreme in the gaming world, drawing in millions of players with its bold graphics, fast-paced action and constant stream of new content. This guide looks at the latest developments in the game – such as themed updates, crossover characters and limited-edition cosmetics – and what they mean for young players and the adults who support them.

It also unpacks some of the key online safety risks associated with Fortnite. With in-game purchases, cross-platform communication and regular seasonal updates creating an ‘always on’ experience, it’s vital that trusted adults understand how to help children and young people enjoy the game without being exposed to unnecessary risks.
