Autumn term

{item_alt_tag}

Dear Parents and Carers

What a wonderful first half term we have had here at Cury School. It has been a pleasure to see all the children settle back into school life so confidently and enthusiastically, engaging so positively with their learning and making the most of every opportunity on offer.

Our pupils have enjoyed a wide range of enriching experiences this term, including swimming sessions, gymnastics, and exciting water activities at Trevassack Lake, alongside the fantastic learning and activities that take place in school every day. It has been lovely to see the children developing new skills, building confidence, and creating lasting memories with their friends.

I would like to thank our pupils, staff, and families for their continued support and contribution to such a positive start to the academic year.

We hope you all enjoy the two-week half-term break and have the opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends. We look forward to welcoming the children back to school on Monday 2nd November, refreshed and ready for another exciting half term of learning.

Best wishes,

Richard Triggs

Head of Provision

Our classes:

Poldhu

We have settled so well into our class routines in Poldhu class this term. All the children are doing so well managing the structure of the day and the activities and expectations. We are all working together and learning how to be kind and respectful in our play and interactions. We have so much learning to celebrate in Poldhu class and this is because the children are all really starting to show much improved learning behaviours.  We hope the children have  a restful break and look to seeing them all in a few weeks for some more fun.

Gunwalloe

Poldhu class have been enjoying and excelling in their learning this half-term. In music, they have been learning how to layer music and enjoyed creating their own melodies on the glockenspiels. In art, they made their own art installation that communicates a problem around the world, such as endangered animals or deforestation. We are so proud of how they turned out! In English, the children have read a book about parasites before writing their own explanation text. They have also continued to enjoy gymnastics and exploring regulation tools such as the body-sock!

Polurrian

Polurrian class have had a busy and exciting fortnight! In English, we have been learning about parasites as we explore our non-fiction text. In PSHE, we have been discussing how to keep ourselves safe, with a particular focus on Halloween. Our History learning has taken us into the lives of the Suffragettes, including Emily Davison and her role in the campaign for women’s right to vote.

We have also had lots of fun with Gill, stretching and moving with the bands. In trampolining, the children have been working hard towards their next certificates. This week marks our final swimming session before we move on to gymnastics after half term. Well done, Polurrian, for all your hard work and enthusiasm!

Attendance

Our whole school attendance was 95% last week and 100% this week.

School is better when you’re here!

Every day in school matters and is a valuable opportunity for our pupils to learn, grow, and thrive. When children are present, they not only benefit from lessons and learning opportunities, but also from friendships, routines, and the wider experiences that help them grow in confidence and resilience.

Cornwall Council’s code of conduct for the issue of penalty notices requires that we share the information below with our families on a termly basis. Please do read this information carefully, especially given that there were changes to the government statutory requirements for attendance in August 2024, particularly around the Penalty Notice framework.

At Cury School, we understand that there are times when it may be necessary for a student to be absent from school, such as when they are genuinely unwell. In these instances, it is appropriate to authorise the absence. However, the Government has made it clear that children should not be taken out of school for other reasons unless the school agrees it is justified under ‘exceptional circumstances.’

As part of this regulation, any requests for leave must be made in writing to the Head of Provision, using our school’s ‘Leave of Absence in Exceptional Circumstances’ form, which you can get from the school office.

No absence for holiday can be authorised. Any absence required for exceptional circumstance will always be considered by the Head of Provision, but the definition of an ‘exceptional circumstance’ is very tight and most requests that we receive do not fall into the government’s ‘exceptional circumstance’ category.

Penalty fines are issued to each parent, not jointly. Therefore, each parent would receive a penalty fine of £80 if a child was to accrue 10 unauthorised sessions from school. Below are some examples of how 10 unauthorised absence sessions could occur:

  • 5 days of school missed due to holiday.
  • 3 days missed for a holiday and 2 days where absence is not reported to school.
  • 10 days of unauthorised lateness to school.

We have been asked to communicate the below information from the government:

‘Parent’ as set out in Section 576 of the Education Act 1996, defines parent to include: natural parents, whether they are married or not; any person or body who has parental responsibility for a child (as defined by the Children Act 1989) and; any person who, although not a natural parent, has care of a child. Having care of a child means a person with whom a child lives and who looks after a child, irrespective of what their relationship is with said child.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information. Working together, we can make sure that your child’s attendance remains strong and that they benefit fully from all that Cury School has to offer.

We encourage you to contact the school if you have any concerns or if you need advice and support in helping your child maintain regular school attendance.

At Cury School, we are committed to working with parents and carers to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Please read the following letter, originally sent out in January, which explains the changes that came into effect in August 2024:

Packed lunches

At Cury School, we are committed to supporting the health, wellbeing and development of all our pupils. As many children bring a packed lunch to school each day, we would like to work together with families to encourage healthy eating habits and help children make positive food choices.

A balanced lunch can help children to concentrate, maintain their energy levels throughout the day, and support their overall physical and emotional wellbeing. We understand that every family is different, and our aim is not to tell families what they should provide, but to offer support and guidance that may help when preparing packed lunches.

Where possible, we encourage packed lunches to include a variety of healthy foods, such as:

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Wholegrain bread, wraps or pasta
  • Lean protein such as chicken, tuna, eggs or cheese
  • Yoghurt or other healthy dairy options
  • Water as the main drink

We kindly ask that sweets, chocolate bars, energy drinks and large quantities of sugary snacks are kept to a minimum.

Healthy eating is an important life skill, and by working together we can help children develop positive habits that support their learning and wellbeing both now and in the future.

Thank you for your continued support. If you would like any further information or ideas for healthy packed lunches, please feel free to contact the school.

The Kernow Education and Advice Line (KEAL) is a Cornwall-wide service offering early advice, guidance and information to parents, carers and students with education-related questions or concerns.

KEAL provides clear, impartial advice, guidance and support on a broad range of education related areas such as learning needs, education pathways and wellbeing. Callers speak directly with experienced advisers who can offer guidance and, where appropriate, signpost to other relevant services.

KEAL is designed to complement, not replace, specialist or statutory services.

Its role is to help families raise concerns early, understand available options and feel more confident navigating the education system. KEAL is co-located within current Family Help Hub front door services and is able also to signpost to other areas of help and support such as parenting and the Family Information Service.

Families are encouraged to discuss concerns with their child’s nursery, school or college in the first instance.

KEAL can support these conversations by offering consistent information and helping families identify next steps.

KEAL went live on 1 June 2026 - we will provide more information on how families can contact the advice line at that time.
