Autumn term

Dear Parents and Carers

It's been a busy start to the term here at Cury across all of the classes.  I hope you share my view that the pupils are enjoying their learning.

As we have had some new students, I'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that Cury school welcomes parental feedback and that we are always here to answer any questions that you have about the provision or school life (no question is a silly question).

Richard Triggs

Head of Provision

Our classes:

Poldhu

Wow! What a start to the new school year in Poldhu class. Children have settled beautifully into new routines, changes to the environment and getting to know new adults. It has been wonderful to see so many happy faces, giggles and moments of joy the last few weeks for all pupils in Poldhu. A big WELL DONE to everyone for being so resilient throughout the challenges of settling into a new class. Children have loved our sensory provision, move to learn sessions, fun learning activities and had so much fun offsite in our gymnastics and lake sessions. I am super proud of all the children for overcoming so much in these early days. Well done Poldhu!!

Gunwalloe

Gunwalloe class have settled back into school well, and it was lovely to see how excited they all were to return to school after the summer holidays! The children enjoyed getting crafty to help make a classroom birthday display. In PSHE, they are learning about keeping their bodies healthy and thoroughly engaged in an activity exploring the nutritional traffic lights on food packaging. They have also been exploring different ways to regulate their bodies during big emotions, including pushing, pulling and heavy exercises. The pupils have already started making great progress with their communication skills during LEGO Therapy!

Polurrian

Polurrian class have had a lovely start to the new term. The children have settled back into school really well, learning new routines, building their confidence and continuing to develop their friendships.

We have been busy with lots of exciting activities and learning opportunities. The children have enjoyed swimming, learning about the Victorians, and working hard during phonics sessions. They have also enjoyed spending time outside with their friends and developing their independence through cooking.

Our Movement sessions with Gill have been a great success, and the children have particularly enjoyed Rebound Therapy on the trampolines, developing their movement, balance and confidence while having lots of fun.

It has been wonderful to see the children so happy, engaged and ready to learn. We are very proud of how well they have settled and look forward to another exciting term together!

Attendance

Our whole school attendance was 91% last week and 85% this week.

School is better when you’re here!

Every day in school matters and is a valuable opportunity for our pupils to learn, grow, and thrive. When children are present, they not only benefit from lessons and learning opportunities, but also from friendships, routines, and the wider experiences that help them grow in confidence and resilience.

Cornwall Council’s code of conduct for the issue of penalty notices requires that we share the information below with our families on a termly basis. Please do read this information carefully, especially given that there were changes to the government statutory requirements for attendance in August 2024, particularly around the Penalty Notice framework.

At Cury School, we understand that there are times when it may be necessary for a student to be absent from school, such as when they are genuinely unwell. In these instances, it is appropriate to authorise the absence. However, the Government has made it clear that children should not be taken out of school for other reasons unless the school agrees it is justified under ‘exceptional circumstances.’

As part of this regulation, any requests for leave must be made in writing to the Head of Provision, using our school’s ‘Leave of Absence in Exceptional Circumstances’ form, which you can get from the school office.

No absence for holiday can be authorised. Any absence required for exceptional circumstance will always be considered by the Head of Provision, but the definition of an ‘exceptional circumstance’ is very tight and most requests that we receive do not fall into the government’s ‘exceptional circumstance’ category.

Penalty fines are issued to each parent, not jointly. Therefore, each parent would receive a penalty fine of £80 if a child was to accrue 10 unauthorised sessions from school. Below are some examples of how 10 unauthorised absence sessions could occur:

  • 5 days of school missed due to holiday.
  • 3 days missed for a holiday and 2 days where absence is not reported to school.
  • 10 days of unauthorised lateness to school.

We have been asked to communicate the below information from the government:

‘Parent’ as set out in Section 576 of the Education Act 1996, defines parent to include: natural parents, whether they are married or not; any person or body who has parental responsibility for a child (as defined by the Children Act 1989) and; any person who, although not a natural parent, has care of a child. Having care of a child means a person with whom a child lives and who looks after a child, irrespective of what their relationship is with said child.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information. Working together, we can make sure that your child’s attendance remains strong and that they benefit fully from all that Cury School has to offer.

We encourage you to contact the school if you have any concerns or if you need advice and support in helping your child maintain regular school attendance.

At Cury School, we are committed to working with parents and carers to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Please read the following letter, originally sent out in January, which explains the changes that came into effect in August 2024:

Packed lunches

At Cury School, we are committed to supporting the health, wellbeing and development of all our pupils. As many children bring a packed lunch to school each day, we would like to work together with families to encourage healthy eating habits and help children make positive food choices.

A balanced lunch can help children to concentrate, maintain their energy levels throughout the day, and support their overall physical and emotional wellbeing. We understand that every family is different, and our aim is not to tell families what they should provide, but to offer support and guidance that may help when preparing packed lunches.

Where possible, we encourage packed lunches to include a variety of healthy foods, such as:

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Wholegrain bread, wraps or pasta
  • Lean protein such as chicken, tuna, eggs or cheese
  • Yoghurt or other healthy dairy options
  • Water as the main drink

We kindly ask that sweets, chocolate bars, energy drinks and large quantities of sugary snacks are kept to a minimum.

Healthy eating is an important life skill, and by working together we can help children develop positive habits that support their learning and wellbeing both now and in the future.

Thank you for your continued support. If you would like any further information or ideas for healthy packed lunches, please feel free to contact the school.
