Summer term

Dear Parents and Carers

I hope you enjoy looking through the newsletter at all the exciting activities that our pupils have been experiencing over the last two weeks.

There is a lot more to come during the remainder of the term: We will be undertaking more off-site trips, hosting the summer fayre, transition days, sending out reports and sadly, saying goodbye to our first year 6 leaver.

Best wishes.

Richard Triggs

Head of Provision

Our classes:

Poldhu

Poldhu class enjoyed a trip to the beach to explore rock pools and collect litter linked to their current learning in Science. They have been working hard to develop their number and shape skills in maths. In English, they read the book 'A Handful of Buttons' by Carmen Parets Luque and wrote their own adventure story about a family. They worked so hard with their spellings and handwriting and were incredibly proud to show off their writing! In the hot weather, the children enjoyed some water play in the paddling pool to cool off! Poldhu class also enjoyed exploring nature during Stormbreak sessions and getting crafty ready for the summer fair!

Gunwalloe

Gunwalloe have enjoyed making the most of the sunshine and being out in the fresh air this week. Lots of fun was had in our last session at the lake where we tried the sailing boats for the first time and we all very much enjoyed visiting our local beach for some fun activities this week. We really value our fantastic enrichment curriculum, especially outdoor provisions as they offer our pupils significant benefits. Being in a natural environment and open space has a calming effect, helping to reduce stress and supports emotional regulation. It has been lovely to see so many activities happening where children are developing confidence, self-esteem, teamwork, communication, and social interaction in a practical, engaging way, while also supporting the development of self-control and responsibility. We also had a visit from a representative of the RNLI where we really thought about safety at the beach and how we can ensure we are safe when we visit one of our beautiful beaches next time.

Polurrian

This week, Polurrian Class have enjoyed another fantastic week of outdoor learning and adventure. We had great fun at the lake, building our confidence and teamwork skills while taking turns on the stand-up paddleboards (SUPs). With the warm weather continuing, we have also found plenty of ways to keep cool, enjoying paddling pools and some exciting water fights, which brought lots of smiles and laughter. Sports Day was a wonderful afternoon, with everyone showing excellent determination, encouragement and sportsmanship. We also enjoyed a visit to the beach, where we explored the rock pools to discover fascinating sea creatures before treating ourselves to a well-earned ice cream. In Geography, we have been learning about renewable energy, investigating solar power and discussing the best places around our school to install solar panels to make the most of the sun's energy.

Attendance

Our whole school attendance was 88% last week and 89% this week.

School is better when you’re here!

Every day in school matters and is a valuable opportunity for our pupils to learn, grow, and thrive. When children are present, they not only benefit from lessons and learning opportunities, but also from friendships, routines, and the wider experiences that help them grow in confidence and resilience.

Cornwall Council’s code of conduct for the issue of penalty notices requires that we share the information below with our families on a termly basis. Please do read this information carefully, especially given that there were changes to the government statutory requirements for attendance in August 2024, particularly around the Penalty Notice framework.

At Cury School, we understand that there are times when it may be necessary for a student to be absent from school, such as when they are genuinely unwell. In these instances, it is appropriate to authorise the absence. However, the Government has made it clear that children should not be taken out of school for other reasons unless the school agrees it is justified under ‘exceptional circumstances.’

As part of this regulation, any requests for leave must be made in writing to the Head of Provision, using our school’s ‘Leave of Absence in Exceptional Circumstances’ form, which you can get from the school office.

No absence for holiday can be authorised. Any absence required for exceptional circumstance will always be considered by the Head of Provision, but the definition of an ‘exceptional circumstance’ is very tight and most requests that we receive do not fall into the government’s ‘exceptional circumstance’ category.

Penalty fines are issued to each parent, not jointly. Therefore, each parent would receive a penalty fine of £80 if a child was to accrue 10 unauthorised sessions from school. Below are some examples of how 10 unauthorised absence sessions could occur:

  • 5 days of school missed due to holiday.
  • 3 days missed for a holiday and 2 days where absence is not reported to school.
  • 10 days of unauthorised lateness to school.

We have been asked to communicate the below information from the government:

‘Parent’ as set out in Section 576 of the Education Act 1996, defines parent to include: natural parents, whether they are married or not; any person or body who has parental responsibility for a child (as defined by the Children Act 1989) and; any person who, although not a natural parent, has care of a child. Having care of a child means a person with whom a child lives and who looks after a child, irrespective of what their relationship is with said child.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information. Working together, we can make sure that your child’s attendance remains strong and that they benefit fully from all that Cury School has to offer.

We encourage you to contact the school if you have any concerns or if you need advice and support in helping your child maintain regular school attendance.

At Cury School, we are committed to working with parents and carers to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Please read the following letter, originally sent out in January, which explains the changes that came into effect in August 2024:
