Summer term issue 2

Dear Parents and Carers

As we approach the end of the academic year, I'd like to draw your attention to a few things.

Our Summer Fayre is fast approaching (Tuesday 7th July) and  you are welcome to attend.  Over the next few weeks, our pupils will be busy making resources and preparing for this.  One of the stalls will be selling cakes/sweat treats and we would welcome some home-made items that we could then sell on the day.

The teachers are busy compiling the students school reports and these should be with you on Monday 20th July.

There will be additional trips e.g to the beach, that will be happening before the end of term and the class teachers will ensure you have details of these in advance so that you can prepare any additional items such as a towel or sun cream.

As always, please do get in touch if there is anything you'd like to discuss or need

Best wishes.

Richard Triggs

Head of Provision

Our classes:

Poldhu

Poldhu class have been working hard to develop their maths skills and make progress towards their Personal Learning Goals. In Science, they read 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley' by Sarah Roberts to learn about sea pollution and worked together to organise what should and shouldn't be found in the sea. It has been lovely to see their communication skills developing through structured play opportunities. In art, the children have been learning how to use clay to create pinch pots and patterned tiles which they have thoroughly enjoyed!

Gunwalloe

In Gunwalloe we have really enjoyed starting back at the lake this term. Lots of wonderful experiences and opportunities building relationships, working through challenges, and developing our teamwork skills. Our Maths learning this term has focused on money. We have started to think about how money is represented as a decimal through developing our understanding of place value. Our geography learning has been focused on where our food comes from. It's fascinating to think about the journey of food before it gets to our plate. Our fantastic range of enrichment and play opportunities continues to support our pupils. There have been many lovely moments where children are showing and developing their skills and understanding of our Cury Values (Kindness, Resilience and Respect). Positive interactions for all pupils when working together, building relationships and learning to communicate and manage their emotions, which is always so great to see.

Polurrian

Polurrian Class have had a fantastic few weeks and have been working incredibly hard across all areas of learning.

In English, the children have been using their imagination to write exciting narrative stories about dragon adventures, developing their descriptive language and storytelling skills. In Geography, they have been learning about renewable energy and exploring different ways that energy can be generated to help protect our environment.

The children have thoroughly enjoyed their visits to the Lake, where they have been developing their confidence in the water through kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. They have shown great determination, resilience and teamwork whilst taking part in these activities.

During Forest School, the children enjoyed making seed bombs and learning about how they can support local wildlife and encourage plants to grow. They have also been taking part in Movement Therapy sessions with Gill, where they have enjoyed expressing themselves through dance, movement and music.

Alongside their learning, the children continue to build positive friendships, showing kindness, encouragement and support towards one another. We are very proud of all the progress they have made this term.

Forest School: Wildflower Seed Bombs

This week at Forest School, the children had great fun making wildflower seed bombs. Using clay, compost, and wildflower seeds, they carefully mixed and rolled the ingredients into small balls.

The activity helped the children learn about the importance of wildflowers and how they support bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. It was a fantastic hands-on experience that encouraged creativity, teamwork, and a connection with nature. Children were able to understand how getting muddy can be fun and enjoyed the sensory play within the activity.

We look forward to seeing what blooms from our seed bombs in the future!

Attendance

Our whole school attendance was 96% last week and 93% this week.

School is better when you’re here!

Every day in school matters and is a valuable opportunity for our pupils to learn, grow, and thrive. When children are present, they not only benefit from lessons and learning opportunities, but also from friendships, routines, and the wider experiences that help them grow in confidence and resilience.

Cornwall Council’s code of conduct for the issue of penalty notices requires that we share the information below with our families on a termly basis. Please do read this information carefully, especially given that there were changes to the government statutory requirements for attendance in August 2024, particularly around the Penalty Notice framework.

At Cury School, we understand that there are times when it may be necessary for a student to be absent from school, such as when they are genuinely unwell. In these instances, it is appropriate to authorise the absence. However, the Government has made it clear that children should not be taken out of school for other reasons unless the school agrees it is justified under ‘exceptional circumstances.’

As part of this regulation, any requests for leave must be made in writing to the Head of Provision, using our school’s ‘Leave of Absence in Exceptional Circumstances’ form, which you can get from the school office.

No absence for holiday can be authorised. Any absence required for exceptional circumstance will always be considered by the Head of Provision, but the definition of an ‘exceptional circumstance’ is very tight and most requests that we receive do not fall into the government’s ‘exceptional circumstance’ category.

Penalty fines are issued to each parent, not jointly. Therefore, each parent would receive a penalty fine of £80 if a child was to accrue 10 unauthorised sessions from school. Below are some examples of how 10 unauthorised absence sessions could occur:

  • 5 days of school missed due to holiday.
  • 3 days missed for a holiday and 2 days where absence is not reported to school.
  • 10 days of unauthorised lateness to school.

We have been asked to communicate the below information from the government:

‘Parent’ as set out in Section 576 of the Education Act 1996, defines parent to include: natural parents, whether they are married or not; any person or body who has parental responsibility for a child (as defined by the Children Act 1989) and; any person who, although not a natural parent, has care of a child. Having care of a child means a person with whom a child lives and who looks after a child, irrespective of what their relationship is with said child.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information. Working together, we can make sure that your child’s attendance remains strong and that they benefit fully from all that Cury School has to offer.

We encourage you to contact the school if you have any concerns or if you need advice and support in helping your child maintain regular school attendance.

At Cury School, we are committed to working with parents and carers to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Please read the following letter, originally sent out in January, which explains the changes that came into effect in August 2024:
